To ensure the accuracy of this "fly clock", the conditions at the scene of the crime (soil and air temperature, humidity) are reproduced in the laboratory. It thus becomes possible to determine the time that it took from the initial egg-laying for a fly larva to reach same state of development as those found at the scene of the crime. This data is then used to calculate the time of death.
