Joint Ventures
Living up to Life
"Leica is committed to produce Leica products of Leica quality in China to satisfy the requirements of its global customers". This is the claim with which two joint ventures were set up in Shanghai at the end of 1993, milestones for Leica's future involvement in the People's Republic of China. One of these joint ventures is Leica Instruments Shanghai Ltd. In November 1993, Leica and the Shanghai Hong Yu Equipment Factory signed a joint venture contract to found Leica Instruments Shanghai Ltd.

As one of the leading manufacturers of instruments and systems for clinical histology applications, Leica thus entered into a partnership in the People's Republic of China. Some 50 employees have been working at the newly-constructed plant, in Shanghai's well-known industrial zone of Pudong, since 1994. Under Managing Director Mr. Qiu Jian Ping, the company manufactures and sells rotary microtomes, embedding systems, tissue processors and other small lab instruments for the Chinese market – some instruments are designed for export to all global histology markets.

From the very start, the high quality standards expected by end users in the various branches of histology were taken into account when equipping the production facilities in Pudong. After only six months, the first equipment from Leica Instruments Shanghai's own production was assembled and delivered.

In the meantime, a start has been made on expanding the product range, and production of cryostats is also to begin in Shanghai shortly. The joint venture in China is a significant step for Leica's future strategy in Asia, which offers many other interesting prospects for joint business activities by the partners.

In December 1996, Leica Instruments Ltd. Shanghai was approved as a "High and New Technology Enterprise" for the first time by the Shanghai Management Committee Office.
