New Company Acquisition by Leica Microsystems

21 Feb 2008 - Wetzlar, Germany / Liechtenstein / Vienna, Austria.

The Most Comprehensive Product Portfolio for Electron Microscopy Sample Preparation

Leica Microsystems (Wetzlar) has expanded its Electron Microscopy (“EM”) sample preparation business by making another company acquisition. On February 15, 2008, the optical company bought Bal-Tec AG based in Liechtenstein. Bal-Tec AG develops, produces and sells instruments for sample preparation in scanning electron microscopy which is an excellent match for the Leica range of transmission microscopy products. Both technologies are used for preparing biological, medical and industrial materials samples.

Leica Microsystems will manage the new product group from its Ultramicrotomy site in Vienna. Together with its other EM sample preparation products, Leica Microsystems now has the world’s most comprehensive product portfolio. Covering a broad range of applications, Leica Microsystems is the only supplier able to cover the entire sample preparation process in the electron microscopy laboratory for both biological and materials preparation. “Electron microscopy sample preparation has an exciting future. Leica Microsystems was already a leader in key segments of the EM sample preparation market and now, with the acquisition of Bal-Tec AG, is consolidating its technological lead and extending its portfolio, offering high-quality products and excellent customer service,” declares Stefan David, Manager of Leica Microsystems in Vienna.
