President of Finland and Royal Swedish Couple Visit Karolinska Institute in Stockholm
The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, his wife Jenni Haukio, His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty Queen Silvia visited Karolinska Institute and Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) in Stockholm, Sweden, yesterday. Among other things, the visitors were given the opportunity to study the unique Leica TCS STED CW super-resolution microscope the Laboratory works with.
The SciLifeLab is a joint venture between four Swedish universities: Karolinska Institute, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The medical research focuses on investigating the molecular basis of complex human diseases, and seeks to find biomarkers that can help to diagnose diseases and monitor their progress.
The Royal and the Presidential couple did not hesitate to study neurons with the Leica STED microscope themselves. The system reveals sub-cellular details below 80 nm – based on a purely optical approach.
"We are delighted that the President of Finland wanted to come to Karolinska Institute during his first official visit to Sweden", said Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson, president of Karolinska Institute. "The Presidential couple as well as the King and the Queen showed a great interest in our work and they seemed very satisfied with what they learned during their visit.”
