Research reSOLUTION No. 8
From Deep Sea Research to Superresolution Microscopy
When Jules Verne published his novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (“Vingt mille lieues sous les mers”) in 1870, the speculations about the world deep down in the sea furnished plenty of material for science fiction. Even 150 years on, we are only just beginning to understand the strange-looking and sometimes fearsome creatures and their ecosystems on the sea bed. We are pleased and also fascinated that our stereomicroscopes are helping research scientists in this quest.
No less fascinating than the endless depths of the sea are the smallest of life’s components. Thanks to superresolution, high-end confocal microscopy and single molecule detection technologies, we are able to look further and further into the cell.
