Leica Microsystems Introduces Extra Large Slide Scanning for Digital Pathology at Neuroscience
02 November 2011

Extra-large double and jumbo slide scanning capabilities in the Leica SCN400 digital slide scanner range
Double and Jumbo Slide Scanning on the Leica SCN400
Wetzlar, Germany. The largest capture area of any line scanner in digital pathology is now possible with the Leica SCN400 and SCN400 F. The latest release in Leica’s Total Digital Pathology portfolio enables the digitization of very large specimens, not possible with any other line scanning digital pathology system.
This development provides a new level of flexibility in digital pathology, enabling users to scan a wide range of samples on a single system. Traditional (26 x 76 mm), double (52 x 76 mm) and now extra-large Jumbo (113 x 76 mm) slides can all be captured in either brightfield or fluorescence using the Leica SCN400 and SCN400 F scanners.
Existing users of the Leica SCN400 digital slide scanner range can benefit from being able to implement large slide scanning, without any hardware changes or physical updates to their scanners.
To view some sample large slide scans, please visit our Virtual Slide Gallery at www.leica-microsystems.com/products/digital-pathology.
Dr. Donal O’Shea, Head of Digital Pathology in Leica Microsystems says, “Line scanning in digital pathology has, until now, been limited to single and double slides. The introduction of extra-large slide scanning is a significant advancement for neuroscience, toxicological pathology and anyone dealing with large tissue sections. The cost and time saving benefits of sharing large tissue sections digitally rather than physically is a valuable tool for our users.”
Leica Microsystems’ Total Digital Pathology portfolio scanning range enables the capture of the widest range of sample types whether brightfield, fluorescence or FISH demonstrating Leica’s drive and innovation in this market. Leica Microsystems’ broad range of interoperable Digital Pathology components provides customers with the flexibility to choose the solution that is right for their needs.
Experience Leica Microsystems’ Total Digital Pathology solutions at booth 2825 during the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting, from November 12-16 in Washington, DC.

With a record number of case submissions and registered delegates, this year’s SH/EAHP Workshop promises to be an exciting meeting for physicians who are interested in the field of “Cutaneous Lymphomas and Their Mimics”, the topic of the Workshop. In addition to an impressive agenda of presentations from world-leading experts, attendees of the Workshop will be able to access cases for review online before, during and after the meeting.
From over 300 cases submitted to the Workshop, 120 have been selected by the Workshop Panel for inclusion in the Workshop Book. Attendees will be able to access scanned slides of these 120 cases via the internet using Leica Microsystems’ digital pathology educational software, SlidePath Digital SlideBox. The scanned images are high resolution scans of the whole glass slides generated using the Leica SCN400. Furthermore, the Workshop attendees can view PowerPoint and Word documents files of all submitted and accepted cases on the Workshop Case Server, providing rich content for the Workshop discussions.
The Workshop attendees with iPads will be able to access and review the high resolution scans of the glass slides through Leica Microsystems’ digital pathology application, SlidePath Gateway.
Dr. Sophie Song, Organizing Committee Chair, SH/EAHP Workshop 2011 says, “We are very happy to have Leica Microsystems as one of our platinum sponsors for this event. The image quality of the Leica SCN400 scanned slides coupled with the ease of use of Digital SlideBox makes Leica’s Total Digital Pathology system ideal for supporting our workshop. Attendees will really benefit from being able to readily access the cases, either through their internet browser or on the iPad.”
Registered attendees will receive information on how to access the Workshop Case Server through both Digital SlideBox and the iPad.

Leica Microsystems and Visiopharm Announce Software Integration for Digital Pathology Image Analysis
15 August 2011
Comprehensive Digital Pathology Scanning and Analysis Solutions
Wetzlar, Germany / Hørsholm, Denmark. Leica Microsystems, world-leading providers of Total Digital Pathology solutions, and Visiopharm the leading provider of Histoinformatics Solutions for Life-Sciences, today announce the completed integration of Leica’s SlidePath Digital Image Hub with Visiopharm’s Whole-Slide Informatics™ solutions for Digital Pathology. Users can now take advantage of superior image capture and management from Leica Microsystems and excellent Whole Slide image analysis and Whole Slide Stereology from Visiopharm in a single system.
This integration provides a truly streamlined workflow for customers using image analysis and stereology in digital pathology. All images stored on the Digital Image Hub server can be browsed and accessed via the Visiopharm software. Selected images are then easily opened and analyzed by either Visiopharm’s image analysis software or stereology software. Following analysis, users can quickly view the resulting data and associated slides through the Visiopharm software interface.
Leica’s Digital Image Hub, developed by SlidePath, is a scalable enterprise-level solution for the management and archiving of digital slides and associated data. As Digital Image Hub is accessed via a standard internet browser and supports images from a variety of digital slide scanners, it is the perfect partner for Visiopharm’s whole slide analysis solutions.
Stavanger University Hospital have chosen Leica Microsystems’ Total Digital Pathology solution for scanning and storage of digital slides, and the Visiopharm solution for image analysis.
Dr. Kjell H Kjellevold, Head of the Pathology Department says, “For us, the combination of these two systems is ideal. The speed and image quality of the Leica SCN400 slide scanner combined with the Digital Image Hub management solution is exactly what is required for making Digital Pathology feasible for research work. The image analysis software from Visiopharm consolidates simplicity for routine work and the flexibility for research. This, together with the low costs of learning and computation, was critical for our decision”.
While Leica Microsystems will continue to develop and expand their existing range of Digital Pathology image analysis solutions, including Tissue IA and the Ariol system, the integration with Visiopharm gives additional options to customers, enabling them to choose the analysis solution that is right for their needs.
Visiopharm will continue to consolidate and expand its integration to the leading slide databases on the Digital Pathology market.
