Heerbrugg, Switzerland / Wetzlar, Germany – As of June, Leica Microsystems has launched two cameras that are ideal instruments for routine brightfield or fluorescence applications. Both cameras are equipped with sensors dedicated to the respective applications that allow live images of up to 30 frames per second and a USB 3.0 interface for fast data transfer. The Leica Application Suite (LAS) and the fluorescence counterpart LAS Advanced Fluorescence (LAS AF) software platform provide for image acquisition and support users in analysis and documentation.

The Leica DFC3000 G is a grayscale USB 3.0 microscope camera for routine fluorescence applications. It features a passive cooling architecture and correlated pixel double sampling and will therefore provide for clear fluorescence signals and low background noise. With its highly sensitive CCD sensor, it is particularly suitable for low light situations such as fluorescence. Providing live images of up to 30 frames per second, microscope users may inspect samples rapidly and protect their specimen from photo damage which will occur whenever samples are exposed to light too long. Data are transferred fast via USB 3.0. “The Leica DFC3000 G produces excellent fluorescence images and can be combined with manual or motorized inverted or upright microscopes and stereo systems – and that makes an affordable imaging package for all budgets,” says Karin Schwab, Product Manager, Leica Microsystems.

The Leica DMC2900 is a USB 3.0 microscope camera with a 3.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor for standard brightfield applications in research, industry and life sciences. Routine applications in these fields often require capturing, documenting and analyzing color images of microstructures in little time. Therefore, the camera is equipped with a sensor that will produce live images of up to 30 frames per second and a processing power to match tasks such as capturing multiple images in mosaics or z-stacks. Its CIE-Lab color engine processes images real time with stable live image speed.

Data transfer via USB 3.0 interface saves users time when documenting their work and will make the camera compatible with every notebook. “The Leica DMC2900 makes routine brightfield applications easier – users will receive outstanding color images and be able to process and document them at high speed. This makes working with a microscope more convenient,” says Urs Schmid, Product Manager, Leica Microsystems.

Both cameras are compatible with a broad range of microscopes and complement each other especially in fields where both brightfield and fluorescence applications may be needed.

Leica DM500 Educational Microscope Wins Worlddidac Award 2010

Heerbrugg, Switzerland. The International Educational Trade Association Worlddidac has awarded the Leica DM500 Educational Microscope the Worlddidac Award 2010. This famous award will be officially presented in October at the international exhibition in Basel, Switzerland.

The Worlddidac Award is the most famous international prize in the education sector for innovative and pedagogically highly valuable products for learning and teaching. Every two years, with the aid of clearly defined quality criteria and a pre-evaluation, a jury of experts assesses, evaluates, and judges the products entered. The evaluation criteria are mainly based on overall quality, safety, pedagogic value, easy handling, and technological innovation.

The Leica DM500 student friendly concept along with its EZStore™ design (integrated handle and cord wrap) contributed to the judges’ decision. The New Leica TCS SP5 II: Fast Frame Rates, Best Resolution and Depth Imaging with Full Multi-channel Capabilities

Mannheim, Germany. In close cooperation with leading research scientists, Leica Microsystems has optimized its confocal and two photon platform Leica TCS SP5 II for today’s and future challenging requirements in life science research.

The new specific optics for imaging or laser manipulation provide the same excellent quality for both applications. In case of manipulation, the new booster mode provides more energy in the confocal volume to achieve better research results.

The Leica TCS SP5 II features the broadest band of imaging speeds and resolutions ever available in one confocal microscope from 1 to 16,000 lines per second and up to 64 Megapixels per image. As a true single point confocal, it perfectly combines fast frame rates, best resolution and depth imaging with full multi-channel capabilities.

The Broadband Multi-Spectral Imaging for multi-labeled specimens is supported by the dynamic beam splitter AOBS® and is further extended by expanding the highly sensitive SP® prism spectrophotometer detection to five simultaneous channels.

Wetzlar, Germany. Live cell research and screening applications are mainly based on samples in an aqueous solution, so the use of water objectives is becoming more and more important. Water objectives allow aberration-free focusing into such samples. Unfortunately, water evaporates at room temperature, even more so at 37°C and therefore cannot be used for long-term experiments.

Leica Microsystems has now launched a Water Immersion Micro Dispenser that is easy to retrofit and can be used with water immersion objectives even for long term experiments of living organisms and screening experiments in live cell research. From a small water reservoir magnetically attached to the center of the objective nosepiece, water is automatically pumped into a water cap mounted on the objective. The compact design allows the utilization of all nosepiece positions. The correction ring stays accessible and the full free working distance of the water objective is maintained. Due to the special design of the water cap, the water droplet remains in place, even for screening or mark and find experiments that involve a great deal of stage movement.

As the dispenser plus water reservoir is fully integrated in the microscope and climate chamber, the water is already at the right temperature and does not have to be heated. A protective collar around the objective that can absorb the entire contents of the water reservoir prevents any water getting into the microscope.

The Water Immersion Micro Dispenser is designed for the Leica DMI6000 B inverted microscope, which is a component of confocal as well as high-end widefield systems. Leica Microsystems’ continuing innovation in microscopy brings the benefits of high-resolution water immersion objectives to live cell applications at 37°C, long term and screening experiments.

Saving Energy and Cutting Costs in Microscopy

Leica Microsystems Presents Innovative LED Illumination Modules at SMT 2009

Wetzlar, Germany. Swift and accurate identification of ultra fine structures, defects, scratches or dust particles in incident light demands a high-performance stereomicroscope, trained eyes and top quality illumination. At the SMT (Systems Integration in Microelectronics) fair in Nuremberg, Leica Microsystems is presenting its innovative LED illumination modules for stereomicroscopes, which offer optimum illumination even for difficult material samples. Thanks to modern LED technology, operating costs are significantly lower than for conventional halogen illumination.

With its practically vertical illumination light path, the Leica LED3000 NVI solves even challenging illumination applications such as samples with indentations and drill holes not accessible using standard lighting components. The Leica LED5000 CXI (coaxial illumination) provides excellent detailed illumination of flat, highly reflecting surfaces such as wafers or polished metal samples, and substantially enhances contrast. Both illumination modules can be optimally combined with Leica stereomicroscopes for routine applications.

Extremely bright and homogenous illumination of the sample is offered by the Leica LED5000 RL ring light, an all-purpose solution for different types of applications. Due to conveniently switchable segments, extra information can be obtained from the sample without having to move it. The multi-contrast illumination Leica LED5000 MCI creates particularly high contrast on the sample: Due to the flat angle of the oblique incident light, the finest irregularities and defects such as scratches and dust particles are visualized. The ring light and the multi-contrast module are ideal illumination modules for high-end Leica stereomicroscopes, although the new LED modules can be used on most of the older models of the Leica M and MZ stereomicroscope series as well.

All the illumination settings of the Leica LED modules are reproducible. A constant color temperature is maintained during dimming. The LED modules offer ideal conditions for documenting results with a digital camera, either as still or moving images.

With a lifetime of up to 50,000 hours there is no need for lamp change and lamp failure is no longer an issue, either. Using up to 90 per cent less energy than a 150-watt halogen lamp, the LEDs cut operating costs and make a valuable contribution to the protection of the environment.

Ultrafast, High-Resolution Fluorescence Image Recording

New High-speed Camera System for Live Cell Research

Wetzlar, Germany. Speed is often the deciding factor for successful imaging in demanding high-resolution image documentation of living cells, molecular processes and rapidly fading fluorescence specimens. The monochrome digital camera Leica DFC360 FX is designed to produce brilliant images at maximum temporal resolution. Thanks to state-of-the-art CCD technology, the new camera system achieves maximum frame rates of 20 fps for full frame up to more than 100 fps in binning mode. The highly sensitive sensor and active Peltier cooling ensure a high dynamic range even for low light intensities. The Leica DFC360 FX is the ideal solution for excellent results in live cell imaging.

The Leica DFC360 FX will convince even the most demanding user with its performance on PC and MAC systems, intuitive Leica Imaging Software LAS and LAS AF and optimal integration into high-end fluorescence systems of Leica Microsystems such as Leica AM TIRF MC or Leica AF6000 LX. Experiments such as z-stack, multi-channel fluorescence with overlay, 3D deconvolution, time-controlled analysis and many other applications are controlled swiftly and effectively. Ultrafast and uncomplicated data transmission is ensured by the Firewire 1394b interface.

The light sensitivity and the frame rate can be further enhanced by binning (over 100 fps with 8x8 binning, for example). Binning and ROI can be used, as can multi-channel experiments with different amplifications, in the fast overlapping mode. The active Peltier cooling minimizes the dark current and guarantees noise-free images even at low light intensities. With shutter speeds of 4µs to 10 minutes and up to tenfold signal amplification, the Leica DFC360 FX offers maximum flexibility. The Leica DFC360 FX proves its full performance potential with ultrafast fluorescence filter wheels, high-precision light sources and perfect sequencer synchronization, satisfying even such demanding applications as Ca++ and FRET experiments.
