Australian Geological Survey Organisation: Oil & Gas

Published: 06.05.09

As part of its work in studying oceans and coasts, AGSO - Geoscience Australia provides research and advice on petroleum prospects, reserves and potential to government and industry.

Information gathered within its petroleum and marine programs is available to the public and the exploration industry, as are exploration data collected by petroleum companies in Australian territory.

This applies to fossil and rock samples also. AGSO - Geoscience Australia manages submitted samples, and maintains a database of cores, cuttings, seismic and well data, and technical reports.

Maps that chart prospective areas are produced and made available to exploration companies, both nationally and internationally.

Research models are developed continuously on the origin, migration and accumulation of petroleum in this country and give insight about regions that show petroleum potential.
