Marc Spehr, Prof. Dr.

Marc Spehr, Lichtenberg Professor for Chemosensation, studied Biology in Bonn. He wrote his dissertation at the Department of Cellular Physiology, which he finished in 2002. Afterwards, he became Postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, School of Medicine, University of Maryland in Baltimore, MD, USA and Independent Research Group Leader funded by the DFG Emmy Noether-Program of the Research Group Chemosensory Mechanisms of Social Communication, Department of Cellular Physiology, Ruhr-University Bochum. He was appointed Lichtenberg Professor for Chemosensation at the RWTH Aachen University in 2009.

Sniffing Out the Secrets of Social Behavior

Yet we are only just beginning to understand the complexities and functional differences of the sense of smell in mammals. Prof. Marc Spehr, head of the Department of Chemosensation at RWTH Aachen University since 2009, explains his findings on the neuronal mechanisms of olfactory perception and signal processing using the mouse model. He and his team are trying to find out how substances for social interaction are perceived and how this perception generates a specific type of behavior.
