Michael Türkay, Prof. Dr.

Michael Turkay, head of the Marine Zoology Department of the Senckenberg Institute, studied Biology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. He wrote his dissertation in his main subject Zoology and habilitated in 2001. He was appointed an extracurricular professor in 2008. Michael Turkay has been working for the Senckenberg Institute since 1976, first, being section leader for crustaceans before becoming deputy director and then director of the Marine Zoology Department. He is an active marine biologist working as well in shallow sea (north sea, red sea) as in oceanic deep sea.

  • One of Our Last Horizons

    An insight into the unknown world of the deep sea was given in an exhibition staged by the Senckenberg Society together with the Natural History Museum in Basel, Switzerland. Shown in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin, Germany, the "Deep Sea" exhibition was a huge public success in 2009. From May to September 2010, the exhibition has been shown in the Natural History Museum in London. Scientists of the Senckenberg Society work with stereomicroscopes and digital cameras both in the laboratory and on the research ships.
