Matthias Schauen

Matthias Schauen is a science writer and translator living in Cologne, Germany. After studying biology at the University of Cologne, he did his graduate work at the Department of Dermatology at Cologne University Hospital, investigating the role of an antioxidative enzyme in the protection of cells from UV radiation. Following his PhD dissertation at the Institute of Biochemistry, Cologne University, where he investigated the functions of putative mitochondrial transport proteins in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, he returned to the university hospital as a postdoctoral scientist at the Institute of Physiology. He investigated the role of mitochondria in skin damage and skin development before leaving academia and entirely concentrating on writing.
