Unlike fluorescence intensity, lifetime is concentration-independent, so it can help you overcome or avoid imaging artifacts.

At the same time, the lifetime of fluorescent probes can be sensitive to environmental conditions, enabling you to monitor dynamic changes in temperature, pH, ion concentration, polarity and many other parameters and analytes that would be difficult or impossible to follow by conventional techniques.
