Leica Center of Excellence at UCLA
The California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) is a hub of interdisciplinary research, translation, and education, where scientists from diverse fields find common purpose in addressing challenges of the 21st century. With locations at the University of California’s Los Angeles and Santa Barbara campuses, the CNSI drives collaborative research across disciplines, translates discoveries into knowledge-driven commercial enterprises, and educates the next generation of scientists and engineers. The Advanced Light Microscopy/Spectroscopy laboratory at CNSI provides a collection of high-end, customized instruments for fluorescence imaging including confocal microscopes and small-animal pre-clinical imagers to perform fluorescence-based imaging and measurements at various spatial (nm to cm), temporal (ns to days) and spectral (UV-NIR) ranges for the study of macromolecules, cellular dynamics and biomaterials with nanometer-accuracy.

SP8 STED
The diffraction limit of light is the boundary for being able to resolve microsctructures using light microscopy. Simply put, structures that are smaller than half the wavelength of light you’re measuring cannot be resolved using standard techniques. STimulated Emission Depletion (STED) is a confocal imaging method that allows researchers to achieve nanoscopy, or super-resolution, as far as 10x smaller than the diffraction limit (down to 20nm).
The Leica TCS SP8 STED system uses a specially configured laser to manipulate fluorophores in a sample to emit different colors than are typical. The data generated by this process gives the system the ability to create an optically and mathematically generated image capable of revealing even the most subtle dynamic processes at the sub-cellular level.

SP8 DLS
Digital Light Sheet (DLS) imaging gives researchers a way of capturing fast biological processes in 3D, while limited damage to the specimen. Long exposure times to intense light can be toxic to many samples, and DLS reduces exposure to this sort of illumination to a single plane.
Leica DLS systems give scientists the ability to observe fast, periodic biological processes in three dimensions and over an extended period of time. Paired with an appropriate camera, these processes can be captured and lead to important new discoveries.

SP8 DIVE
Confocal imaging provides incredible resolution and clarity, but this typically comes with a limited imaging depth to 25-50 microns. Multiphoton imaging leverages specially configured lasers to generate pulses of long wavelength light that scatters less and penetrates into tissues for deeper imaging levels.
The Leica SP8 DIVE gives researchers unlimited versatility to try new multicolor, multiphoton techniques for in vivo imaging. This system allows for an exponentially increased imaging depth to reveal processes in intact organs in living specimens, from microns to millimeters

Laser Microdissection (LMD, also known as Laser Capture Microdissection or LCM) enables users to isolate regions of interest from entire areas of tissue to specific individual cells or even sub-cellular structures for further study.
