Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Servei de Microscòpia, Spain

The Microscopy Service is a service to support research at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, which has the infrastructure and technical tools necessary for the application of microscopy in various fields of research, especially in biomedicine, chemistry, physics, materials science, geology, etc.

These include the following fields of application:

Studies on ultrastructure of living matter

  • Diagnosis in medicine and veterinary
  • Basic research in biomedicine
  • Toxicological studies of drugs and medicines
  • Morphological studies of taxonomy in Zoology and Botany
  • Morphological and ultrastructure of microorganisms
  • Localization and diagnosis of viruses
  • Immunomarcatges and Cytochemical
  • Studies of internalization of proteins conjugated with gold
  • Three-dimensional reconstruction of fluorescent structures

Microstructural studies of material science:

  • Determination of particle sizes and shapes
  • Quality control and production processes
  • Surface microstructure of different types of materials: fabric, plastics, metals, etc.
  • Microstructure of polymers
  • Reconstruction of three-dimensional submicron structures: tomography

Crystallographic studies:

  • Study of growth and epitaxy thin films
  • Study of defects
  • Study of nanomaterials: nanotubes, nanoparticles, nanoroods

Studies of electronic microcircuits:.

  • Interface analysis
  • Determination of multilayer structures

Characterization of Photosynthetic Biofilms from Roman Catacombs via 3D Imaging and Subcellular Identification of Pigments

Artificial illumination can harm hypogean monuments by inducing the uncontrolled growth of photosynthetic biofilms (green sickness or maladie verte). With the aim of preventing biodeterioration or…
