Coherent Raman Scattering microscopy (CRS) describes a set of label-free methods that image structures by displaying the characteristic intrinsic vibrational contrast of their molecules. CRS comes in two popular variants, Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) and Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS). The crucial advantage of these methods is that they do not require labeling, and hence the sample remains almost unaffected. Instead, the image contrast arises from the spectroscopic properties of the various chemical species found in organic material.
