Video: Implant Microsurgery – Microscope-aided Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevation, Lateral Window Technique
The lateral window technique is a method of maxillary sinus floor elevation which enables implant placement in the maxillary posterior region where the maxillary sinus is enlarged and/or the alveolar bone height is deficient. When creating a lateral window, great care should be taken not to perforate the maxillary sinus membrane. While carefully examining the border of the bone and maxillary sinus membrane using a probe under the microscope, the surgeon creates the access to the sinus cavity using hand instruments and piezoelectric devices.
As a scaffold, graft material is filled into the space between the sinus floor and the elevated membrane. The lateral window is covered with a titanium mesh, which is stabilized using titanium tacks, in order to prevent wound dehiscence caused by migration of the graft material. As the patient is under intravenous sedation, the surgeon is required to pay close attention to the movement of the sinus membrane as the patient breathes.

Implant microsurgery is based on the traditional surgery theory; it is not something that changes the theory itself. It is merely a surgical approach aiming at improving tissue healing with the aid of a microscope.
