Microscope Objectives

Leica Microsystems – The Ultimate in Optical Competence

Leica Microsystems has designed and produced top-class objectives for a wide variety of applications in research, industry and medicine for more than 160 years. The precision optical engineers at Leica Microsystems have the high degree of  experience and expertise required to minimize aberrations resulting from the physical conditions of optical components. A sophisticated production process leads to objectives that guarantee superlative image quality.

There are two basic categories of aberrations that require correction: monochromatic and chromatic. The main monochromatic aberrations are: spherical aberration, astigmatism, coma, field curvature and distortion. Chromatic aberrations can be divided into axial and lateral.

Leica’s top-performance objectives feature maximum correction and optical efficiency, and have already won several awards. All over the world, leading scientists trying to visualize, for instance, the finest cell structures with resolutions down to 20 nm rely on optics from Leica Microsystems.

Leica OEM Optic Center

Standard or Specialized Objective?

Apart from top-class objectives for standard applications, the extensive range of Leica objectives comprises application objectives with specially optimized properties. These include water and glycerin objectives and objectives for laser microdissection that allow single cells or chromosomes to be separated from surrounding tissue and collected.

Another example of how technical expertise and the traditionally close cooperation between users and Leica Microsystems are integrated in product innovations are objectives for electrophysiology. They are corrected over the whole wavelength range from UV to infrared and equipped with a ceramic cap designed by Leica Microsystems. This cap is made of a material that exhibits no disturbing properties even during highly sensitive ion flow measurements in the picoampere range.
