Dr. Ferrer, Chief of Neuorsurgery at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, talks about the first fetal spina bifida surgery performed using the M530 OHX surgical microscope.
The surgery was carried out to patch a spinal deformity on a 23 weeks old fetus in the mother’s womb. During the surgery, the womb is opened and partially removed. There is therefore a significant risk of infection which could lead to miscarriage or permanent damage of the mother’s reproductive organs.
"The entire procedure has to be fast, fast and accurate. A prolonged exposure increases the risk of infection." Dr. Ferrer explains, "This is why we need the [M530 OHX] microscope, to help us attain the maximum efficiency and speed."
