The Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) evolved from the Asia-Pacific Intraocular Implant Association (APIIA) to reflect the dynamic developments in cataract and refractive surgery at the turn of the millennium.

Founded in 1987 by Professor Arthur Lim, who foresaw the importance of such a development in Asia, and having witnessed rapid growth under the leadership of Professor Graham Barrett and Adj. Associate Professor Ronald Yeoh, current president Dr Hiroko Bissen-Miyajima is set to take the APACRS into a new era.

The APACRS holds its annual meeting with regional organizations in the Asia-Pacific region. The society's primary function is the dissemination and promotion of advances in the various fields of anterior segment ophthalmic surgery in the Asia-Pacific region. Over the years, the APACRS has developed various instruments to fulfill this function. Among them is EyeWorld Asia-Pacific, a quarterly news magazine that keeps its readers abreast of the latest development while keeping its perspective on what is relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. From its inception in 2005, the magazine's readership has grown to over 30,000 ophthalmologists in over 22 countries in the region.

The APACRS is a leading organization representing cataract and refractive surgeons - a forum for regional interaction working in close partnership with regional and international cataract and refractive surgery societies in providing ophthalmic education.
