Tympanoplasty surgery is performed to repair a tympanic membrane perforation. There are five types of tympanoplasty. Type 1 tympanoplasty surgery, or myringoplasty, is limited to repair of the tympanic membrane without other surgical manipulations in the middle ear.
Myringoplasty is a commonly performed and often uderestimated procedure. The choice of approach is dictated by the position of the perforation in the tympanic membrane. Optimal vizualisation is integral to successful repair.
