How Clinical and Surgical Microscopes Support Otolaryngology

Experience of Dr. Duane Mol with Leica ENT microscopes

The number of ENT surgery procedures is increasing year after year. It is estimated that there will be over 21 million ENT procedures performed annually worldwide by 2022 [1].

Dr. Duane Mol is the Director of The Ear and Eye Clinic in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he also practices as an otologist and ENT surgeon. In addition, he is the South African Representative for the LION, the Live International Otolaryngology Network.

Dr. Mol has been working with Leica otolaryngology microscopes since 2008. Surgical microscopes support ENT microsurgery and minimally invasive procedures, offering enhanced visualization and a greater depth of field to achieve high levels of precision.

Dr. Mol uses the Leica M320 F12 microscope for most of his procedures. The M320 F12 combines apochromatic optics with cutting-edge LED illumination and high-definition imaging technology. It is easy to use, flexible and very maneuverable, providing unique benefits for ENT surgeons. The features Dr. Mol says he most enjoys are:

  • The small head, which is not bulky and has a nice smooth finishing “without little pieces sticking out”;
  • The versatility, with different ways to use the microscope. Dr. Mol uses just one handle to maneuver;
  • The very good concentration of light “without any heat” and the beam lights that are perfectly suited for procedures such as grommets and tympanoplasty surgery;
  • The ability to keep the microscope out of the anesthesiologist’s way thanks to the thin design and the long reach allowing to easily move around the patient;
  • The possibility to move the tubes and change the angle as required;
  • The fact that the microscope is equipped with a LED lighting system, meaning “the bulb can’t blow.”
